It depends on a number of factors.

Are you able to fabricate a frame or willing to use the old seat frames on a new set of seats from a car that wont slot straight in?

Do you want to stay original or are you willing to fit aftermarket of non VAG?

Do you have money to spend and how much?

Would you be any good at modifying a rear seat from a tintop?

Basically if I had all the money on the world I wouldn't want anything else other than to trim my existing seats in dolphin grey leather with matching door cards. That would set me back anything up to a grand, well worth it.

tian, thanks for the reply, ime more than willing to sacrifice the exsisting frames, ime not to bothered about keeping it origonal, but would prefer standard type seats rather than buckets/sports etc, do you think the best route is to use the base off my  seats and use them on a complete set. if so which ones will fit. thanks

Trouble is unless you recover you'll never find any Mk1 or Mk2 seats that are in good condition. These are old card now and a good interior is always going to be difficult to find. Your best bet is to watch ebay, there was leather retrim going for ?400 with no bidders so that's still with the seller.

Like I say, Mk2 seats, Rocco seats and some later Polo seats are popular too but this will need your sub frames. You'll always need to fabricate the rear bench though.

Good luck.
