MK1 bumpers are dam heavy

Got a question for you Mk1 buffs.

Background first i think. I took off my clipper kit to give it a good old referb. and inspect the metal behind the arches looking for that nasty stuff called rust.  Lucky enough none. just plenty of mud and crap. Spring cleaned it all and resparayed the under side of the stone chiped clipper arches.

Any how whilst the clipper was off and in the the shed i decided to take off the HUGE metal front and rear bumpers off. They weighed so dam heavy. bloody railway sleepers or somthin. Dam things are well made. i would hate to hit anything with them.

The question i have is, Does the strength in the bumpers have anything to do with the chasis. Would the chasis twist with out them?

Reason -  if the bumpers dont really do much i could wieght save on the car. The bumpers alone must weigh in araound 40Kilos each. Also i thought i could refabricate them in strong box alloy. Hope fully keeping the rigidness of the chasis.

any thoughts?

The bumbers are only bolted on and have nothing to do with strength of the chassis  , you could quite happily run any MK1 with out bumpers .

Cheers………….

kweel chaps, Thinking the chasis would need them. Just to say you get told loads of stories about this and that and nine times out of ten it wrong info. Im glad iam a member of this forum and get great and correct advice.

Now iam going to make alloy bumpers for the inside of the clipper. Hope fully reducing over all weight of the car.

Ta.
