MK 1 GTI Resto

Hi All,

The underside of my Golf is to be fully stripped including fuel and brake lines and I intend to clean the old underseal off. I have a couple of queries though. The easiest way for me to do this would seem to be with a wire brush in the grinder. I have tested this out on a small area and found that it quickly cuts all the underseal off but also removes al paint back to bare metal!

I intend to stay away from all the seams and joints were panels meet (VW have already done an excellent job in these areas) and concentrate on the main areas of the floor pan etc.

What is the best body shot to use. I know there are lots of different products but getting sound advise is quite tricky as the best available always tends to be the one the motor factor is selling!!

Does anyone know if I do clean the floor pan to bare metal can you apply the body shot straight on or would the pan then need to be primed?

Any help would be great.

i cleaned my floor pan up on the mk2 i had,

i took off lose chunks with wire brush

and dirty rotton bits i got a rough ish sander pad for the grinder, took this to a harsh surface 1st, becuase you can end up taking to much off even more so with new pad,

once i was happy with sander pad,(don't bother with a fine pad it chug up quick and be useless) take it the pan and take off any rusty marks and and stubborn lumps of old under seal, worth taking your time and having car as high as you can get it,

then i got stiff brush and cleaned any dirt and lose bits still hanging on,

i don.t think you need to worry about preping the ara you can now just underseal away, but heres what i did next

i used a anti rust mix from halfords splashed it everywhere under car little expensive but as i had spent so much already last thing i wonted was it rotting anywhere,

left it to dry over lunch

then sprayed over it with a good primer, 2 coats, and 3ish coats where i knew i had bigger areas un covered back to bare metal,

then i used a random spray paint colour and gave it a light coating, came back to it a few days later,

and gave the conplete floor pan and half the wheel well, inner sills and outer sill's  3-4 decent thickish coats over the course of a day,

now my floor pan and surounding
areas were not to bad to start with but as i had the chance to do it before i had car resprayed i took the advantage of it bein stripped down to nearly just a shell

musch to the disgust of the sprayer thou as he said my sill would be a c u next tuesday of a job to spray but i was puttin side skirts on to cover this anyway which he was slightly more happier about
