MK 1 bonnet hinges!

I drove my golf down the road the other day and the wind got underneath the bonnet and it came at the windscreen, the screen is fine but the hinges arent! the bonnet wont go down now and i have removed the dash in the hope that I may be able to knock the body out to re aligne the hinges but its all boxed off, prob coz its reenforced being a convertible! So, anyone here know how to over come this or anybody repaired this kind of damage before?

The same thing happened to me a while ago. I had to remove the wipers to get the bonnet back down as it had ridden over the top of them and wedged. Tied the bonnet catch to the bumper to hold the bonnet down for the rest of the day. The hinges were obviously stretched and mangled, so replaced with new ones and the rest was cosmetic damage to the bonnet. The top hinge bolts are easy, so can you get to the bottom hinge fixings then? Can't remember how they're fixed to the body…my dad did the work on mine, but it seemed to be an easy enough job.

I thought they were welded on, I was so busy taking the dash out and felt so gutted that I couldnt get to the back of the hinges to knock them out that I called it a day, I will look for bolts tomorrow, cheers for the info, may just prove helpful...

Right, for the record and for anyone who has a bonnet fly up and results in damge to the hinges.

Step 1; Remove bonnet from car.

Step 2; Remove retaining clip from shaft which the hinge is attatched, a small mirrow may prove useful here.

Step 3, remove the hinge and replace. Put the old hinge and new together to see just how distorted it is!

To finish repair, just reverse the steps above!

Glad you got it sorted. Presumably you've checked the bonnet catch is now working properly aswell! Last thing you want is it to happen again! This advice may be useful to you and others : http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=46811&highlight=bonnet
