little help

just for future reference, ie when the funds permit………..

1. what wheels did my wifes gti leave the factory on? apparently the one fitted atm are mk2 steelies.
2. i understand that there should be some stripes down the side in silver? can anyone tell me the size of these so i can try and order some, or where i can order the correct ones from?
3.what about the grille? this one needs replacing as the plastic has broken at the bottom. i have seen grilles with a red surround, was this a std fitment? also the badge is missing.

Assuming that it is a Gti, then it will be a Campaign model, and the original wheels are the famous Pirelli P-slots you may have seen or heard about.

Your car should have a thick silver line running horizontally down both sides of the car, which i think is available from 'TurboTechnics' on the forum.  A simple PM to him is worth a try.

The grill with the red surround is standard on all the mk1 gti's.  These are available from places like ebay and scrappys possibly.

Nice looking car btw.  Andrew

Car look great.  8)

Side strips are available as a set from www.trimsport.co.uk
?20. (look under badges not exterior).
They also have any badges you might need.

The stripes should be:

* Thick (above) and thin (below) stripe along lower edge of front wing/door/above rear sill.
* Thin stripe just below push-on trim
* Thin stripe just above lower edge of tailgate at rear

If its a Campaign it should have a 4 lamp grille with fogs, not spots. Here is the closest pic I could find, I think its a blue one, not black, but the decals are the same:

Its possible its a non-Campaign GTI, but then its also possible that its not a GTI, but a lookalike. At one time (when GTIs were sought after and all the others weren't) people made GTI copies. Here's a few giveaways:

fuel injection engine
black headlining
(if its A-reg) MFA computer in the dash

There's lots of other details, eg lowered 20mm, badges, etc but I've listed the ones which are hardest or most expensive to swap.

are these items things that a gti should have or shouldnt have?

all i have to go on at the moment is the small tear off slip from the log book as the mrs is at work, so i'll have a look when she gets hjome if there is still light, or at the weekend.

Those things are what it should have…

If the V5 is correct then it should be a campaign model I think (don't quote me though!) If you get the chance, have a look at the VIN number - it should contain "EW". If you're unsure, post the whole thing up and someone on here will be able to confirm its identity 100%.

I think it's most likely that the shell has been resprayed at some point, the sunroof and grill have been replaced with aftermarket parts, and the wheels with other VW ones.

It's not hard to fake though is it… Most people round my way thought mine was a gti When I first had it (1300cc driver)… Black headlining was one of the first things I did - With that Vinyl Coat spray stuff!
