how can i remove n fit my glovebox complete with inner??

hi:)

my glovebox lid is toast and there have been a few attempts at repair (not very good attempts either) so i want to change it.

i found another glove in a scrappies locally but when i came to read up on the subject one here i found that apparently you have to change your whole dash to do so??

is this true or is there another way of doing it??

i have found this listing on ebay which appears to be a complete box including liner http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Golf-GTI-Mk1-Glove-box-caddy-mk1-g60_W0QQitemZ150005214148QQihZ005QQcategoryZ9889QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Hi,
you can remove the golovebox from the dash by melting or cutting off all the little plastic lugs which are heat - melted behind the dash. Doubt if it can be done without removing the dash, though.
If you're careful melting them with a soldering iron, you can save enough of them to allow them to be reused, but it is tricky…each one has to be softened enough to allow the box to pull out, but as soon as you move on to melt the next one, the previous ones go hard again  (phnargh phnarg!). I managed it, and you don't need every on to be intact to allow the box to be fixed into another dash, or you can always use suitable glue to fit it in,
cheers,
Oldfart

Yep that's correct - usuallty have to destroy the dash or box depending one the one you want to keep.

A previous owner has managed to get the glove box out of my dash without causing damage to either. This has the effect of opening up the dash area underneath allowing you to work on the bits below.

From what I can see, the only 'damage' that has been caused is to the retaining holes around where the plastic lugs secure the box to the dash. The dash has been kind of cut to allow removal. When the box is in place the damage can't be seen. The box doesn't squeek either so I'm quite happy with it the way it is.

Hmmm, the little clips on my glovebox are broken so that when you open it via the usual lockable bit, the whole thing comes off in your hand.

Is there no easy way to make it clip back on? Surely there must be some DIY solution to this…?

And in ashtray news, my new tray part is so tight that it won't move or come out without a huge amount of force. WD40 actually made it worse. Any tips?

Wow. Post pictures when it's done - sounds a bit different!

I'm determined. I'm gonna take the lid into a Mr Bricolage or a Bricorama or one of the other "brico" stores here in France and hassle blokes wandering around the aisle that looks useful for the task until one of them has a bright idea if I can't find something suitable.

My dad travelled half way around the world to visit me, and ended up fixing my glovebox!!

We found this putty that's two colours: blue on the outside, white on the inside, and, like araldite, when you mix them together, they become a glue-putty that sets within three minutes. It smells like araldite, so I'm guessing it's pretty similar.

He used a roll of cigarette filters that someone had randomly left at my place to mould around where the clips had broken off. "We" let it set hard for 24 hours.

He then removed the two pins from inside the glovebox with a screwdriver, put the lid on, holding it up, then slid the pins back in. Poifect!

It hasn't broken yet…
