Hood Fluid Help.

Attempted to top up fluid for convertable. loosened nut at top pipe whilst hood in lowered position and fluid pi$$ed out into the boot. Once it levelled out I tried to to squirt the fluid into the hole but it just came straight out, it would not increase the level. Fliud now so low hood would not raise by power so had to manually close hood.
What am I doing wrong?
