help

recently brought a stainless fuel cap for my mk1 (got the standard looking star shaped one not the flat faced allen key looking one) problem is the back of the cap (the bit that goes in the hole) hits the bend in the fuel pipe before the little lock catches have a chance to hold the cap in the car.(can slide cap in and out but can't lock it onto car) the old cap obviously fits ok and at £110 I was hoping the new one isn't a cheapy! anyone know or have any ideas?

oh dear, how do the caps compare when you put them face down? sounds like the new one is to deep.
it may be possible to bend the tabs down (ie: away from the face) but remember it needs to seal. If it doesnt petrol will quickly evaporate away and will also let in water dirt etc which has to be avoided at all costs. couple of pics might help

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)

the new one is deeper but was trying to figure out if it's a doggy cap or maybe the fuel pipe has been replaced at some point with one that bends to soon/sharply?  cheers for the reply and yea, I'll get a pic up wk end to see if someone can shed some light
