Help with Respray

Hi, will laquer stick to a panel that has been rubbed down with 1200 grit wet and dry and polished/buffed with 3G?
Thanks

surely you'd just want to rub it down with 800-1000 and laquer over that then do the polishing

But would that still give it a deep shine?

1200 grits fine but i would'nt polish it before spraying the laquer cause it will react with any silicon in the polish you might be ok with the 3g as its a cutting compond and
not a polish if unsure test it on a spare bit of metal

if it aint broke dont fix it but betters allways better

Laquer will "stick" to anything, shiny or not. It is a common practise to laquer over polished wheels to retain the shine.

I polished my car at the weekend with a mop pad, loads of water and 3G. What a mess I made!!

It is metalic green with peeling lacquer which looks a mess. I tried to flat the peeling lacquer back and then buff it up but I failed!

Anyway, after giving the panels a buff up they seemed to look misty and murky :-s is it not good practice to polish over lacquer with a mop and g3?

might help a bit if you could explain what/how you're doing this. as the loads of water bit has got me rather confused. any pics of what you mean would be helpful aswell.

The paint burns without water :-s

g3 is crap murka compound is the best. and you dont need water can be used dry.
g3 leaves all white under the doors and bonnet jams murka dont and with g3 you use loads of it, murka just a little goes a long way.

surely the paint burning would be down to the polishing pad you are using and speed its running at. i find a tiny spray of some form of quick detailer on the pad with a bit of the compound you are using works well.

I would use 2500 or 3000 for the finish and you dont need to polish the paint before clear coat.

The deep shine is due to the clear coat and not the paint underneath, Sanding down paint will just give you a better looking finish as there will be minimum Peel effect.

As a rule painting onto a polished surface is not a good idea! you are asking for a paint reaction that way.

One more thing. Be careful not to do too much you don't want to go overboard on a panel and end up with it not matching the rest of the car!
You can spent lots of time getting a mirror finish but if it stands out when you put it back on the car it will just look wrong!
