HELP!!! Removing a Scuttle Panel!

Haloha,

Can anyone give some kind words of wisdom on the process of removing a scuttle panel?  Basically a step by step guide would be superb along with the4 tools I'll need, or just point me in the right direction of a book to buy if it takes too much explaining.

I've never attempted removing mk1 body work with or without an angle grinder before - very new to the game of sparks flying! :?

Any advice would be a massive help as I've only recently bought the car and this is the main thing which needs doing and "Blackie" has been kind enough to hold onto the donar car for me until the weekend after next!

Thanks in advance.

Rich ,

Snaffle this book for tips on body repair and welding etc , one of the best references you will find {5 for sale on Ebay at the moment} .

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Haynes-bodywork-repair-manual_W0QQitemZ4617959714QQcategoryZ36086QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Then get the excellent………

As for chopping off the scuttle , Well its quite a complex job for the beginner  8O  Get blackie to chop off the whole scuttle and keep it for you , read these books then decide if your brave enough to have a go  :|

I would not like to do a step by step guide over the net in case it goes pear shape  :) Or until you are confident to have ago

Cheers……….

Angle grinding is possibly the most fun you can have with your clothes on… I tried it for the first time not so long ago, and am itching to do it again (angle grinding that is :))

It's pretty easy to do too - just point and cut. Have a practice on a part of the donor car that's already beyond repair if you fancy, just to get the feel of it.

Also, always remember to wear goggles / eye protection…

And old clothes you don't care about - I set fire to a couple of t-shirts when doing mine 8O didn't burn myself but wrecked the clothes

Chudd - A bid has been placed, thanks for that.

Mcscrew - I'm looking forward to it - i'd thought about gloves as well so my hands remain the same shape and dont melt in the "heat of the moment"

The job will prob turn out to be a mission and a half but I'll feel like i'm at least trying to start getting the car back into a cleaner state.

Cheers

Angle grinding is great fun, but keep an eye on where your sparks are going, i.e avoid/remove/cover up fuel sources and trim/furnishings.

Try using Machine Mart Plasma discs for cutting. Tried them a while ago and haven't used anything else since. They are only 1mm thick and make very clean straight cuts with no distortion, standard 2mm discs can chew through the metal. They don't last as long as 2mm discs, but at 81p each you can't really grumble.

Get plenty of newspaper or rags, windscreens can get terribly pitted from bits of grinding wheel, and molten metal, goodluck

Agree ;)
I use those 1mm discs too but it's another brand.
They actually cut trough the metal, not chew trough it :D
If you put pressure ont the disc side ways it doesn't breake, it's very flexible…

If you're going to do it properly you need to take the windscreen out as most of the rot will be hidden around the seal, and I dont think I would risk getting an angle grinder that close to it either?
