HELP PLEASE fuel filler pipe

Hi

Can anybody help me please

my car has been in the garage for 3 days and only today they have said the pipe doesnt fit!!

I have a mk1 golf cab.gti feb'91

The the new filler pipe i supplied to them which i was given with the car doesnt fit apparently. the garage are saying it doesnt connect to the tank.

Are there specific ones needed for the cabrio.my local GSF only supplies earlier mk1 cabrio will this fit?
I obviously need a new one from somewhere but where and which one?
Please please please can anybody help me

Hi, as far as i am aware the cabrio filler neck is shorter than the tin top version at the tank end, i fitted one last year to my cabrio and because of the price difference between the two i bought a tintop version and simply cut it down to size, all works fine.

Hi as 89 clipper has said i think for memory when i was reading on here etc, the early cabby ones were shorter and the tin top ones are longer which you can cut down. I dont think you can buy the genuine vag ones but there are stainless stell repro's avaliable, but i have heard a few people having trouble with them. I think there is also a filler neck gasket that goes between filler neck and tank, that might be what garage needs.

I have exactly the same issue.

over the weekend, i went into full "Fuel lines overhaul mode" and so i replaced the mechanical pump on the block, replaced all the flexi lines with braided steel pipes, cleared out the sender doowhatsit under the back seat, drained the tank, used a magnet to grab any remaining rust and then set about doing the fuel filler pipe.

All of the above went swimmingly until I got to the fuel filler neck. unscrewed the old one, released the PITA crimped clips at the various points (one on the vent pipe  near the filler hole and one on the rubbery filler pipe thing at the tank.

Got my new pipe, offered it up, bolted it into place and thought BUGGER!

it literally is 2 inches too short! Ran around to a number of motorfactors in the area, but no-one could help!

I have since found out that the pipe has changed shape (in terms of manufacturing)

Did a google search and the closest i could find was this: Fuel filler neck hose 1.75"/45mm per cm.

I think all in all the distance from the fuel filler neck to the tank is 10" (or 25cm) so i ordered the entire length of pipe.

It ended up costing me £17.15 inc postage, and has been shipped today. i can give you more info by the weekend if it fits.

VW discontinued their OEM part but i recall this being £35 from the stealers.

Alternatively you can:

i) cut a piece of your old filler pipe
ii) cut the existing rubber hose in half.
iii) put the halfs at either end of the cut piece of the old filler pipe and use it as an extension to the new one.

This for me was not an option as i had some bad rusting on pretty much all of my old pipe.

Also do a trial fit of your petrol cap over the new filler neck. My old one for some reason didn't lock, and i ended up breaking it while forcing the mechanism. I've had to order an aftermarket one which I will test tonight.

Im going to get a new one manufactured from stainless for £40 whats you opinions please is this a good idea?

Anything that saves rust from going into the tank then clogging up the carb is a good idea, is that a full filler neck made from stainless steel for £40?

Sorted 1 hr at the garage , heated up and changed the new pipe I had. All fitted now with fuel in at last, now time to enjoy the sunshine!!

Not convinced my petrol sender is reading correctly though, is there any links on how to change / check it's working ?
