Helios Blue Exterior trim...

Does anyone know what was the exterior trim on the Mk1 in Helious Blue?
Obviously the silver side stripes on the lower portion of the sides, but was the silver strip on the tailgate factory fit? I also would like to know whether the black surround is genuine to on the Blue cars as ive seen a few without and mine reputedly "never had it" according to previous keeper from new….Up front black vw roundel and silver GTI badge
Also what stereos were fitted from standard. I know that the Blapunkt was factory fit but beleive there was an upgraded one??

The silver stripe along the lower edge of the tailgate will not be standard fit. They were usually found on older, non-GTI models such as GL's. I believe your's should  have the black tailgate surround so I would assume the cars had paint and a new one has not been applied. Whoever sprayed it must have shyed away from fitting a new one or couldn't source the part. I've been told it was only the black GTI's that didn't have this decal.
Up front it should have a black VW, in keeping with all the GTI's and the GTI script badge should have chrome lettering.

Are you getting confused with the chrome/silver strip on non-Gti's? Black and Helios Gti's had a silver (sticker like side stripes) pin stripe along bottom edge of boot.

I thought Helios cars had the black sticker around the rear hatch too?

Small pinstripe is std along the lower edge of the tailgate.

Rear hatch sticker (black surround) splits opinions. Some people say it should have it. I don't think it should. Mine has silver pinstripe but no black surround. There is no evidence that there's ever been a surround on my tailgate. I personally think that black side stripes = black hatch sticker. Silver side stripes = no hatch sticker.

Silly me…when you said silver I'd assumed you meant the chrome. That'll teach me to go on the forum after a night shift ops:

I'd always thought black and helios cars had grey decals. Anyway there's the answer these two both had the same colour decals and the black one doesn't have a tailgate surround so it would make sense that the blue one doesn't either. However they both still have the lower stripe on tailgate.

Conclusion = sounds original

and no radio was factory fit. Dealer accessory only. VW program included Phillips, Blue Spot and Panasonic

Aha! Sorry yes meant the "silver/grey" stickers including the top pinstripe

The stereo I have is an early digital display Panasonic which was in an 1600 1981..

Anyone else got any ideas one way or the other? As its seems 50/50 whether the Helios Campaigns had the sticker or not….????
I need to know as its getting to the stage where the body shop will be asking for the stickers
 

Your car is correct in the photo. The only thing missing is the silver pinstripe from the lower edge of the tailgate (same thickness as upper side stripe). Plenty people think Gti = black hatch surround, but it's not true…………

Thanks for that, I had my doubts when we discovered a previous are of paint on the tailgate where a scratch had been so I assumed it could have not been put back whether for cost or ignorance. Be good to see your GTI, as the pic has not posted..

I had to get a little bit of body work done on one side of my Helios Blue Campaign which involved removing the side stripes. I bought the silver ones on Ebay(the choice is silver or black) but my original stripes were more of a dark graphite grey.

I do not particularly like the silver stripes and would be interested if anyone knows where I can get the graphite coloured ones.

When I said "silver" I refer to the grey ones. I have seen the ebay ones and was not to sure I beleive Lance at Trimsport does the original coloured ones as I bought a set last year at inters from him..only now I cant find them and have to buy more... :cry:

Well I have found the trim set… and tailgate surround… This is the last time Ill ask but just to be sure….
Did the Helios blue GTI have the black tailgate decal or not as it seems to be 50/50 with some guys in various clubs. Even VW were unsure… :dontknow:  So to be authentic I need to know asap before they refit the glass… Thanks again to all who have helped and thanks in advance to those who are about to.. :wink:

Im 100% sure they didn't.  Mine doesn't, and the guy who restored it told me it didn't have the black surround before he restored it.  The Black and Helios GTIs didn't have them.

Mine doesnt either and I dont recall seing one on other helios blues.

 

Mine doesn't but God knows if it was like that when new.

Tailgate pinstripe am I right in thinking it finishes a coulpe of mm from the edge of the 'gate? a close up of where to end it would be greatly appreciated(on any colour Mk1)

The stripe I had fitted to the cars side below the metal trim..surely not original is it?
