Heater / Fan

I bought a Mk1 back in the summer… the heater/fan hasn't really worked that well. A bit of heat seems to come out of the vent, but if I turn up the fan it doesn't blow air faster…. so I need to get it fixed for the winter.

Does anyone have any ideas on exactly what might be the problem (i.e. the switch or the motor) and is it a big job to repair (do you get to it from the dash or bonnet?).

Sorry I'm not that technical, but would like to know a bit more before taking it to a mechanic or maybe having a go.

Thanks again!

(PS I still need to get a Haynes manual…. if anyone could also recommend where to get a cheap manual other than Ebay that would be good)

its probably the resistor on the motor, or the fan is slightly siezed. remove the plastic try in engien bay and the plastic mesh grille over the fan. move the fan with your finger, if it feels stiff you need to clean it up. on mine it was siezed solid! removing the fan is a bit of a mission but luckily i managed to sort it in situ.  switch the fan on then stray each end of the fan roughly where the bearings are with decent penetrating oil, eventually it should start turnign faster. once happy, spray it again but this time with some silicone spray lube to keep the bushes nice and free, job done.

I had a similar problem with my cab, I worked out there was a big drain on the current through the fuse box, so  I connected the fan straight to the battery and it fired up straight away, so I wired it up via an inline fuse straight to the rotery switch. Not ideal I know as it is capable of running now without the ignition on. But I did this before I had very much experience with electrics! Its on my to do list to wire it through a relay in the ignition system!
