GTI red grill piping on a new grill question...

Evening all, before I resorted to boring you all do death I already read all I could find by doing a search on the topic. Basically I have a GTI with the 4 light grill and the red piping round the outside like normal, what I want to do is get a 2 light grill that also doesn't have the VW badge in the middle. I've been looking on the usual auction website to see what's on and noticed there's loads for around the £20 mark. I've asked a few sellers if my red GTI outside piping will fit on but none seem to know!?!  Do you gurus know which one I'm best of getting that will defo have the option of banging my old red piping on? All the pictures I've looked at on eBay and other various vag shops don't seem to show in enough details for me to see, plus I've never seen what the area looks like under the red strips so maybe I wouldn't know if it was staring me in the face  :redfaced:

All standard grilles also had a badge in the middle. So if its not got this, then its some kind of aftermarket jobbie. Whether the red surround will fit or not is a definite "maybe".

If you desparately want a combination of badgeless grille with the surround, then one way is to make your own badgeless one, from 2 standard ones (just cut out a section of the grille slats and a corresponding hole in the other, and somehow glue it in).

Ah I didn't realise that was the way it works. I knew all the badge less ones were aftermarket ones just I didn't realise they might not take the red piping. I could live with still having the badge as my current one is a black badge and barely noticeable anyway, my main two preferences were to go down to 2 lights and keep the red GTI pipe trim. Is it only these aftermarket type that you can buy from shops and ebay or does anyone know of a one that'll do what I want without it being crazy money? Or is it time to trawl every forum know to man in the classified sections for a genuine 2 light one? And if I do have to get a genuine one is it only GTI ones that have the lip for the red piping trim or can I use any of the non-GTI ones? Sorry about all the newbie questions

All standard grilles have the same lip but only GTIs have a red surround. The surround can be clipped onto any other standard (pre-Clipper) grille.

if you get an early grille you can debadge it simply by popping the grille badge off, there is no hole left behind

that way you casn buy an oem 2 lamp grille and the red piping will then definitly fit

The piping will fit if it a standard design debadged grille.
It wont fit onto the debadged grilles based on the deep slat MK2 style grille ..
