Where can I find info on series 1 vin & when various changes were made.
Have searched forums no luck?!
When last steel bumpers?
178 3188 203 what bumpers should it have?

The third digit "8" indicates a 1978 Model Year. Therefore your car should have the metal bumpers (black, grey or chrome depending on model). Paint codes are normally 4 digit beginning with an "L".

Its a built in 77 LD 5dr ,believed 1st diesel sold in Ireland, 60k,subjected to "big bumper" conversion years ago ……………………
