Glove box Lock

Is there supposed to be a seperate key for the glove box lock?
or does it use the same as petrol cap (what did VW originally intend?)

would be nice to lock away the useless tat I have in there!

The main ignition key should lock your glove box too. Someone may have replaced the lid in the past and not changed the lock over or something.

You can retumble the lock to match your ignition key, the tumbler bits inside the glovebox lid lock are a different type to the rest of the door locks though.

You can buy kits of tumblers from VW or get some other old locks from a scrapper and take the tumbler bits you need from these. There are some old threads about retumbling locks on here somewhere.

Sorry to disagree, but in both of my golfs there has been a differrent type of key for the ignition, filler cap and glove box. The ignition key is , well, the ignition key, the filler cap key is smaller and the glove box is bigger.
Anyone else??

Your right russt, had a look on my break, the ignition key doesn't fit it (too big) and neither does the filler cap key..

is this another thing VW changed at all during production? only campaigns use ignition key for box as well maybe?  :dontknow:

Later cabs use ignition key for the glove box.  Early tin tops were different I believe.

Mine's an EW campaign with the three different original keys, so was it just the cabs that had it differently?

To my knowledge on all hatches the glovebox uses a different key which is all metal with head in the shape of the VW symbol (like a Beetle key).

 Didn't realise that, can't say I've ever tried locking the glovebox on the hatchback! Just tried it and it don't work with the ign key for me either.

My '88 Cab's ignition key locks the glove box so I just assumed it would on t'other car too!

So I guess if you want to lock your box you'll have to get a lock from a cab and retumble it to fit your ignition key, or are glove box keys and tumble kits still available for the hatchback glovebox from VW?

You can still get the blanks. If you have a serial number on the lock I reckon it can be cut OK.
