Gearbox rebuild

Having problems changing gear, especially into second. I'm wondering if I should attempt a gearbox rebuild? Has anyone tried this, is so how difficult and what was the cost etc?

This is for a 1990 Cabriolet 1.8 GTi.

If the rebuild is unfeasible I thought I might try putting some Slick50 in the box, but I've heard several bad stories about this. Does anyone have any good experiences of Slick50 (in the gearbox not the engine)?

Cheers

Are you sure its the box and not the linkage?  Loads of people claim gear selection problems to the box when its the linkage all along.

If you have box problems get a good used one or get an exchange one from a reconditioner - They are usually not too expensive and there are a few companies about (I know of one in Somerset)

I was struggling with 1st and 2nd but just adjusted the linkage from underneath and its sweet now try that first its cheaper than a new box.....

Thanks

Cheers for the help guys, I'll try and tweak the linkage before attempting anything with the box itself.

Still no recommendations for using Slick50 from anyone?

Never used slick 50 but my second gear is a bit cruncy [worn] so i changed the gear box oil to fully synthetic and its a lot better now ..

I haven?t used any fully synthetic oil but have thought about using it in the past. I've heard mixed results so don?t know whether to risk it. I've heard people rant on about Redline MTL and just did a search and found this… mixed reviews here too:

if u,ve got the box off and are putting in new oil its worth changing the rubber seal and brass bush that goes around the imput shaft

Hi I would put a new gearbox mount on first before u take the box off. The diesel one is stronger
