Front jacking
Stupid question prehaps, but I do not want to knacker the golf more than it already is. I have read the best place to jack is on the wishbone. Can you give me an idea of whereabouts? I want to get it on axle stands with the jack as a safety.
Cheers all

"I have read the best place to jack is on the wishbone'
Hence my reply.
For jacking I use the Jacking point I mentioned, and for axle stands i sometimes use No 3 in the above photo. But its quite insecure, and the axle stands can/do rock. But it depends where your working on the car and what your doing.
When i did my engine conversion, i used 2 pieces of wood with a groove cut out down the middle and placed these on the sills (then axle stands underneath) which spread the weight nicely across the sill and jacking lip
This was very stable for working underneath, and caused no damage to the sills

Does no one use the jacking point, by the back of the front arch, about 3 inches in from the sill ?
The round plate thing ?
TBH bit dodgy, they corrode quite a lot and go weak. It tends to be much stronger under the wishbone area. Sill is okay too, if you spread the load with a large block of wood with a slot cut in it.

I agree with other replies to your question by spreading the load along the sills or the strong round points that you are currently using with your jack.
Please see my project ( http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=46506&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 ) on page 2 where I made a jig to support the car which allowed me to remove what I wanted and work underneath. I used this both at the front and rear of the car.
Hope this helps
