Found my Leak...s!

Alrite guys,

Having stripped my interior completely, I set about hosing the car to find out why the drivers footwell was getting wet!

Immediately it became clear that these little grommets need replacing, guessing you can buy them? This is just above and to the right of the fusebox

Although they are not the main problem…

where the clutch cable goes through the bulkhead it appears split, and there is a plate riveted on inside the bay, this is where I need some help really, just purely what to do? Im guessing its a grinder and welder Job?

It appears the seal on the scuttle panel lets water run down where it shouldn't, hence its getting in where the clutch cable comes out!

I'm slightly relieved it aint the windscreen though!

Thanks for any help!

My clutch cable has got that repair to it as well mate and it's only stuck on and has come loose so need to sort it out if water is going to get in……

I think it happens when the clutch cable moves and rubs the bulkhead and the hole gets bigger over time.

You could consider one of these if your one needs replacing…… http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-MK1-GOLF-GOLF-CABRIOLET-GTI-CLUTCH-CABLE-BULKHEAD-REPAIR-PANEL-/300648082403?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+I&hash=item460005abe3

Hopefully that will be a doddle for him!

No worries mate. Shouldn't be a problem for someone in the know. JonP keeps trying to convince me to remove the dash and have it welded in place but I think I am going to get it riveted in rather than fanny about taking the dash out. ;)

Ah mate its so easy to get the dash out!
I'm gonna get some of the old bit cut out cuz i think its rusting slightly and I dont want it to spread!

It shouldn't if you treat it properly before hand and get rid of what's there. I've got a deadline to try and meet with mine so dash out is last on the list at the moment

Repair panel looks like aluminium, if so you will not be able to weld it in... If you old man is a welder it will be easy enough just to fabricate your own out of mild steel and weld that in...

Yea I thought that when I looked at the pic, but it does say it can be welded??

Tempted to buy one and get a copy of it made in steel if its ally, my grandad can get me one made as he has contacts at an aeroplane manufacturer.

It really is a case of knowing the right people! haha

has your skuttle panel not got the rubber grommets that are a bit tube like to direct the water as it drains out?

you dont even need to rivet those plates on, they're just supposed to be bonded to the bulkhead. a good squeeze of silicone or whatever around it should solve the problem, leave the underneath open so water doersnt get trapped at the bottom mind, just seal the top and sides
