Fitting rear side parcel shelf support

Hi guys,

I have recently bought a new rear side parcel shelf support as one of the brackets on the old one snapped and it was making a hell of a racket. I went to fit the new one last night, thinking it would be a simple job, but soon realised it was a little more complicated. I couldn't work out how you get the belt out of in of where the belt is meant to go through?? Any help would be much appreciated…

Rich, introduce yourself fella 1st, let people who you are, what you drive etc fella.
Regards parcel shelf, fiddly, yes.
Anyway unbolt seatbelt from the 3 fixing locations, undo and remove the shelf also so both seatbelt and shelf are together.
Now if you look on the side of the mech of the seatbelt, you will see it has black cappings, look to a corner and you'll see a small pin(Plastic) same as casing, simply push it through and remove cap, you will see the mechanism and a ball bearing on a wheel cog.
You will also see the cog has a plastic clear arm connected the the outside of cog, simply lift the arm so the seatbelt does not lock has you pull the seatbelt out to a good length.
Put the seatbelt you've just pulled out on the floor and put something heavy approx half way between mech and other end of seatbelt so to stop it retracting whilst you work.
Then get end of seatbelt the tip part(Metal) and buckle and one by one, put at an angle through the shelf hole, it will go throu, again do the same with the other buckle.
Job done, will take about 20 minutes remove and refit.
Also before you you put back together remember to place the seatbelt the right way through the hole so it is the correct way and you don't cause any twisting on the belt.
Whole job for both taking your time 1hr fella

Excellent that worked a treat. I am from the Isle of Man and currently doing up my black 1983 1.8 GTi. Seems never ending at the moment, one thing after the next but I'm sure I'll get there in the end. The forum looks excellent guys and sure I will be back on soon posting more questions. Cheers for the advise fella, Rich
