fitting new chrome windscreen trim HELP!!

Help!! tried lube and washing up liquid but cant seem to thread it any more than 8 inches round, and its beginning to get me ratty!!

any advice would be greatful

you can make your own if you have a bike spoke and a suitable screwdriver handle. i'll do a how do at some point.
