door skins

has anyone ever atempted this or had it doen what werew the results like

Yes but never on a Golf MK1 , its quite an easy job once you have the skin off . You can buy a door skin folding tool that makes it even easier to crimp the flange down .  http://www.perfectpanels.co.uk do full skins or just bottom repairs and they are cheap . Read a book about it first eg:Haynes Techbook : Automotive Body Repairs & Painting Manual  .


There are plenty of second hand doors out there cheap so i would only re skin as a last resort  ….

Your missing the point though my doors are the early allen bolt types not liek all other mk1 doors so they got to be reskined

isnt it just a case of grindign out old door panel then crimpinmg on new one?

Whats an early door like i thought all the doors were the same through out the production , except of course the inner trim differences and minor lock window bits etc ?

Replacement skins are listed as : VW Golf  1974 to 1983 all models .
If you have to re skin follow a good book like the haynes one first and you wont go wrong providing you have some basic skills and equipment .

so did i mate no early ones (mines 76) is diferent the main lock is tiny diferent door handle and it bolts on with 4 allen keys not two bolts liek later ones

I think Chudd might mean the Haynes VW Golf & Jetta Restoration Manual . Has photos and explantion of how to reskin a Mk1 door.
