door sill trim covers mk1 gti tintop

hi, does anyone know how the plastic sill trim covers  hold into place properly just finishing refitting my retstored interior and cant seem to work it out, the covers have the clips located underneath them but are to wide to hold onto the body, is there another part that clips onto the body of the car? or do you just try and pack it out with some carpet? as the interior carpet its self does not lap over enough to hold it in place any way..
any help would be appreciated?

had these on and off loads of times and never noticed this problem. Only suggestion I can think is to take the metal clips out and pinch em together with some pliers then put em back in again.
