Door seal HELL!!!
hi there, just a mention and maybe some help, im in the middle of restoring my mk1 golf gti and all is going well and should be in a mag by next year but i am being slowed down by stupid problems, a little whild ago i bought a pair of new door seals form GPC, now i don't know if anyone else has used these if so let me know, but after fitting them i can't even close the doors now, there just seems to be to big and when closing the door back they compress till they can't compress anymore and door if miles away from the body, i have fitted the locks and to get the door on the lock and click shut u really have to push it very hard( with risk of denting it), now this can't be right, looking at the old rubbers and the ones from GPC the old ones just looks thinner and more felxiable also a sort of different shape. so i have concluded that the rubbers they sent are just not a good fit for the car and will need to replace these again now. does anyone know where i could get a good fitting pair of door rubber?
Sorry for the rant and to GPC but the rubbers just are not good.
Batman.
if anyone has any ideas or help that would be great, i will put some pick of the rubbbers up on here tomorrow.

i also had massive trouble when fitting my door seals, sounds stupid i know to anyone else who hasn't tried it before, or knows in which order to put it
i put the original seals back on after respraying and it was still MILES out, same issue i.e. the door would not just shut, but its basically a massive fiddle, most things on a mk1 are like lego, but the door seals make NO sense to me at all, y not just have one big seal within the door frame like a mk2 eh?
there are several different orders/ ways in which the seals can fit, theres a seam/flap on the longest one, that u have to prise in and tuck underneath it
basically keep trying until you get it mate, also moving the door pins themselves helps alot, not just the locks.
all im saying is keep ur gpc ones for now, and keep trying really, as i had enough trouble with original genuine ones, i spent a whole day fiddling about with them
good luck, hope that helps

I'm looking to get some new door seals for my Cabby, so is it worth trying somewhere else instead or is it literally a case of trial and error?

I got some door seals off e-bay and fitted one and it worked fine! Must have been lucky, was going to chage both but was to scared to remove a working door seal!

OK…
done this a few weeks ago
used the seals from GPC - you need three of them as there are only 4 door seals left.
You will need 1 complete seal and about a quarter of the spare one.
I fitted mine as per usual and had the problem of the door not wanting to shut and requiring massive pressure to even look anywhere near like closing.
the problem was the part of the seal running down by the hinges - it just need pushed further out towards the door skin and reglued - you can see if you close the door over and lok down the hinge line you will see where it is nipping the seal and not allowing the door to close….
now they close spot on….
GPC seals are fine.
