Door Restoration

Hi,

I've been restoring my rusty front door and filling in any imprefections. During last week when it was a sunny warm day i sprayed the door with some 2k primer.

Its the first time i've done any spray work myself. Once i finished spraying i noticed afew runs in the primer, and afew tiny bubbles. Just wanted to know whats the best grit sandpaper to use, just before aplying the final coat and for getting rid of the runs in the primer?

Regards

You now need a guide coat !

Rub this down with p600 wet and dry , see the link below or buy Haynes body restoration and painting book [Ebay or Amazon allways have loads] . The preperation is the most important part .

im guessing your from teesside from your name? Any work ive done when spraying, ive put on god knows how many coats of primer and rubbed it back down each time to get it a bit more smoothe and you always find imperfections.  sorry i cant remember what grade paper to use but you can get the wet and dry sponges which sould work well.

Cheers "Chudd", Doing a guide coat makes sense that way i can hopefully get a flat smooth surface keyed ready for the top coat. Thanks for the link.

Hey johntheboy, no im not from teesside. I've added around 4- 5 coats of primer, so hopefully I don?t get anymore tiny dots in places after sanding. I would have thought that any miner marks would be invisible after the top coat is applied?

I just learnt the hard way about making sure to degrease thoroughly before painting & between each rub down / coat. Forgot to do it and one area just went mental!

Afraid not mate, you will see marks on the door through the topcoat once its gone hard so make sure you`v rubbed down all your filler/prep work correctly first  then rub down the primer with 600 wet and dry as one of the lads already siad and you`ll be ready for topcoat :y:

Hope that helps a bit mate

keep on keeping on

Hope you are using good safety gear and at least an air fed mask when spraying the laquer - remember this stuff is highly toxic containing cyanides in 2K form.

Thanks guys the 600 grit worked a treat, I?ve just tested it on the window guide bar which was previously rusty and I had prepped and primered. The wet and dry sand paper did keep getting clogged every 2 minutes tho which was a bit annoying.

Timski: Yeah I know what you mean after spraying the bar I have noticed the areas which I didn't pay enough attention to during the sanding of the primer they have shown up in the top coat.  :banghead:  Lucky the top of the bar which is visible I sanded down well which ending up looking ace.  :D

Cero: Yeah I?ve got all the safety gear you defiantly need it with the amount of fumes it gives off.

Might be daft question but did you use it wet? If not that'll be why
