Door check strap prob

Hi ,
I've got a problem with my drivers door check strap. It is not attached inside the pillar (car side not door). It has been like this since i've had the car  so don't know how its happened. Cant reach it from anywhere and my local body guy dosn't know what to do other than welding it in situ, which I'd rather not do. Have any of you seen this before? or know how to fix it?
Also, said door is a little droopy. I'm sure this has been discussed before but if you could point me to the right thread i'd appreciate it . :D

Cheers
andy

I seem to remember having a prob with my check strap - I removed it in the end!

As for droopy doors, they have bee discussed on the old forum.
My remedy is quick and easy though…
Take out the bolt that holds the TOP hinge together.
Place a washer (The thicker the washer, the more "lift" you get) between the two hinge parts and replace the bolt. As the part of the hinge that is attached to the door sits in FRONT of the part that is attached to the car, the back of the door is lifted upwards.

Have a look, you'll see what I mean.

AL.

It doesn't look like you can get that part seperately????? it must come as part of the A pillar!!

I'm pretty sure the check strap on the a pillar side is welded (spotted I expect to it) so if your man can do a tidy job the welding should be OK.

Regarding the drop in the door….a lot of body shop guys will just lift the door from the open(latch) side and twist the hinge/pin.
This may sound rough but works and doesnt need that much force.
I fit industrial doors and this is done through out the industry too. 8O  :D

My check strap is also suffering from the same problem…..unfortunately it has also been spot welded back on by Stevie Wonder, and is on my 'to-do' list.

Can you tell me how you get on with yours Andy and I'll then give mine a go.

Hi tom,

not yet tackled that check strap, but will see if i can't do it soon, I mean its only been like that for nearly 2 years   .

But to Al_Mk1 , cheers mate that washer trick worked a treat. Well, after I realised I needed to move the latch pin also, as the door wouldn't shut!

MMmm… straight lines…. :D

No worries! Glad it worked.
Must have been out by quite a bit if you needed to move the latch pin too though!

By the looks of the paint, the latch pin had/has been moved down a bit in the past.  :?
