DISASTER!! :(

So my new roof is on (has been almost on for months lol) and tight as a nuns knickers. New cables, seal gaskets, all went really well. However, it's just been screwed up at the very last hurdle;

I was getting the brother in law to help me staple the roof into the rear window frame and the stupid ham-fisted idiot put all his weight on the bottom of the r-w-frame and bent the hell out of it.    By this point it had all been trimmed down and finished off and he was trying to put extra staples in. I've tried bending it back up but i think it's been stretched too much. It holds the window in place perfectly well but the roof material isn't being pulled tight beneath the window now and looks saggy. I've removed the staples and tried to tighten it but it just goes saggy when the window is put back in.

As the window is held tight and can be sealed perfectly well should I just put up with it, or do you reckon it would be possible to buy a new replacement window frame and use that without trashing my nice new hood?

SERIOUSLY unhappy bunny right now.  :banghead:

Ow! You must be seriously annoyed!

Replaced mine a few years ago and that was the scariest bit to do, cutting that fabric under tension is scary!!

I don't know whether you would be able to remove your frame and replace it, but if you can we have a cabby we're breaking so might be able help you out with the frame. Not sure of the condition of it at the mo, but if you're interested we'll have a lookie.

Good luck

Oops, see my thread has been given a more pc name. I did use a # thingy, sorry!

Yes, very very annoyed, and upset.

Thanks for the window frame offer; not sure what to do. Might just sell it as a lost cause. It's perfectly fine as it is, just doesn't look great.

No probs

I'd have been saying something similar I'm sure!!

Be a shame to give up on it after all your work. I'm sure it's sortable. Why not wait a bit and have another look?

Post up some pics and see what people think/advise you to do.

It's in a garage 7 miles away at the mo so I can't see it. Will get to it asap.

Anyone on here replaced just the window frame at all? Aren't there straps that need to be taken out, and some bolts?

i replaced my window frame, but i did it at the same time as the hood. changing the frame is easy enough without a hood,  just dont think it would be that easy with a hood in situ, depends if you can remove the staples around rear window without damaging the hood, the frame is held in by staps on the top and hinges on the bottom, the hinges just unbolt and the straps are removed by opening the roof half way (to give you some slack) the pushing the straps out of the frame from behind and removing the little plastic inserts in the strap, then pulling the straps back through. hope this makes sense.

bad luck mate, what a shame. Crazy quiff does new stainless steel ones.

Using a new stainless one would probably be better if it's do-able. Less likely to be any weak spots as you're fitting it, which is probably what happened with the original.

Thanks guys.

Unstapling the roof shouldn't be too much of a problem, it's getting it back on when it's all been trimmed that I'm messing my undercrackers about!

Nyergh  :banghead: nyergh  :banghead: nyeerrrrrgh  :banghead:

Stainless steel sounds muchos expeeensive. As it's questionable whether this can be done or not I think I'd rather get a good condition original one and give it a good coat of paint before I put it on, then there's less financial risk.

In my head I'm creating a clever scheme of getting the mother in law to sow some straps back on to the cut section of the roof material so I can pull it back into place when I'm restapling. Wah, my poor Gti

Give me a shout if you want me to see what condition the one on Rach's roof is in.

It might be rubbish, might be sound, no idea  :dontknow:

I've got to tdo the same on my cab, bought a hood but the window frame was well past saving. got a good one to fit but I'm not sure how well its all going to go together, especially since the hood skin is being fitted to another hood frame as well!  fingers crossed for you and me :(

Well, I've managed to bend it back up most of the way so it's acceptable, but not perfect. It doesn't affect the working of the hood in anyway there is just a little area of sag in the vinyl under the window. I can live with that, still looks gorgeous :D

Anyway I have to sell the car now, been told I've got 4 weeks until I need to have it out the garage and I nowhere else to keep him  :banghead:

Well done for sorting it, been wondering how you got on.  8)

What a shame you have to sell after all your work, is there no way you can keep the car?

that is a shame :(
btw i got my hood on last weekend and i managed to fit the frame with the hole already cut out, it was a bit of a pain but I managed it in the end. main issue is you have nothing to hold on to while trying to staple the fabric down
