Just go down your local motorfactor and ask for a tin of Cutting Paste - the stuff in the yellow tin is pretty good - brand escapes me, might be Turtle?  It's all pretty much of a muchness.  For an even nicer finish there is 2000 grit paper and loads of soapy water (but if your paint is thin it'll ruin it) and for less severe than cutting compound, there is good old T-Cut.

cutting/rubbing compund is okay, but dont use it too vigorously, you'll soon go through paint, 2,000 grit sandpaper is an equally sensible idea, but hard to get an even finish (bits cut deeper than others)

T-Cut isnt a good option if you need to deeply restore paint, it takes hours on end. there is a more abrasive option called safe-cut which is like rubbing compound toned down a bit.

ive just realised that whole paragraph didnt help at all, so i would personally use rubbing compound (sparingly)

:D

its true… i had a citroen AX for a while (in a summer, just to make a few quid) and i used it to get rid of grubby lines around the badges, it just killed the shine after only a couple of minutes, wouldn't come back either, so i was forced to cut through the whole laquer to get back to paint

and its made by a company called farecla, they do a whole range of cutting compounds, g4 for high cured solid paints (i use that on freshly painted cars when flatting and polishing) g3 is much coarser and must be used with lots of water so it doesn't burn the paint off (ive done that too  ) and im sure they do a range of other products which might include wheel stufff
