Copper brake and fuel lines.

Does anybody know of a good place to buy copper pipe in the right diameter for brake lines and fuel lines on a mk1? Also the fittings for the brake lines please. I want to make my own so dont want the ready made stuff. Thanks.

You'll also need a flaring tool to do the ends of the brake lines with, but be warned do not buy a cheap one, as I made this mistake, and gave up in the end because I couldn't get the flares right.

I brought a pre-made kit for about ?50 in the end, and they all fitted ok. Much less hassle.

Of the top of my head I'm afraid i can't remember the diameters of pipe needed, sorry!

Hello,
I've just finished doing this on my MK 1.
I used 3/16 (4.75) brake pipe - looks slightly thiner than the original stuff, but seems OK. Ask for Kunnifer (sp) as apparently it doesn't corrode / go green like the copper stuff.

I got a flaring kit from these people,

The kit included pipe and fittings. The end fittings were a wee bit longer than the originals so I got some different ones from the local motor factors for ?6.00.

The flaring kit worked fine when I got the hang of it. I didn't have a pipe bender so bent the lines around a socket held in a vice.

3/16ths is what I have bought too. I found the fuel lines to be 8mm so I ordered that too. I have access to a proper flaring tool and have done small sections before so making them isnt a problem.

What are people's thoughts on DOT5 fluid?

Do you mean DOT 5 or DOT 5.1. DOT 5 is completely different. Once you've used it, you cannot clear it out of your system. You will have to be very careful of water ingress and bleed on a regular basis. I tend to stick with a name brand DOT 4 and replace whenever I remember to.

Erm, oops! Im pretty sure its DOT5.1. I can use that without the afformentions problems no?

5.1 is compatible with 3 and 4. Lucas DOT5.1 seems to be highly thought of by big name tuning houses.
