Clutch job !

Hi all

Finally got my Mk1 GTI running, needed a new fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel filler neck  and the fuel systems cleaning out, she now starts on the button & sounds pretty healthy ! only problem is that the clutch is slipping badly. I know its an engine out job and I have had a quick look through the haynes manual - anybody got any advice/tips for this job, gonna be two of us doing it and I'm hiring a engine hoist.

You don't need to take the engine out but you need the hoist, to support and tilt the engine. Basically, you leave the engine mount near the cambelt in place, but remove all the others, and you can tilt the engine/gearbox sufficiently to slide off the box and remove it from underneath. Just like this:

Hi all,

Got most of the way through replacing the clutch on my mk1 GTI, but I had real trouble getting the gearbox back on coz the clutch pushrod fowls on the hole in the clutch it is supposed to sit in.

I understand it needs to be dead central - anybody got any tips on how to make sure it is ?

Also should I replace the clutch pushrod seal while i'm in there ??

Did you buy a clutch with a centring tool in the box? Its a little plastic circular thing, that you put into the clutch while you're tightening the bolts. Because the VW clutch is the 'wrong' side of the flywheel, normal clutch centring tools don't do it.

Some do and some don't. I bought a LUK clutch and made sure it came in the box - I opened the box at the counter to check. Ironically, I think I've now lost mine, I have a clutch job to do again swapping one over, so I need to have a look for it. If I find it I'll show you a piccie, I'd have let you have it except that I'll shortly be needing it! I am sure someone else will be able to help you out, though. Its a plastic thing and can only be worth a couple of ? at the most.

Did mine in 3 hours.

I use a vernier caliper to measure the plate to flywheel gap in three places when they are the same tighten the clutch up.  No probs.
