Cleaning black plastic bumpers

I have an 82 gti with black plastic bumpers and wheel arch trims.

I have used Mer exterior plastic cleaner before on newer cars and been pleased with the results, unfortunately, it doesnt seem to cut it on the golf.

Any suggestions?

main suggestions in no particular order

peanut butter (smooth)
something oilly, veg oil etc
or the liquid shoe polishes.

I use liquid shoe polish on the plastic bits on myn. takes a couple of goes but once it gets in just have to top up once a year. Wipe off excess with a clean cloth when you get to that stage for an even colour.

clean them with swarfega and a nail brush.
black them with peanut oil. then finish them with something like autoglym bumper care.

the important bit is clean them with swarfega and a nail brush.

Are you not fans of using a heat gun on plastics? I used the tried and tested technique on my T4 bumpers with amazing results… any reason why you guys don't do this?  :?
