but I would suspect a porous roof letting the water in.
They go like that after some time, the water collects in the frame channels and you do tend to get a drip by the roof handles.
The gaskets in reality just stop the wind, dust etc blowing in, the roof cover it's self is supposed to shed the water off the roof.
How old is the roof?
I had the same problem, I tried all sorts of remedies it nearly drove me mad, the bloke I bought the car off said it had a new roof a couple of years ago, more like 5 years ago.
The problem only went away when I replaced the roof.
I also did my headliner and interliner at the same time.

I bought some, but it is completely a different density to the VW stuff.
I bought some VAG stuff just before me and jelly belly did his roof, so that was back in june time? I think..
So if you want the original stuff you could ring the local VW dealer and see/if they have some.

The water if coming through the hood may roll off on the underside, depending on how close the interliner is to the underside surface.
It may also so be that most of the cars I have looked at don't have the interliner top cover anymore as this disintergates.
(this also wears the rubberised padding against the roof)
So I guess the rubberised pad would act like a sponge and again potentially the water runs to the outer edges.
I think there are different schools of thought, when it comes to the foam gasket seals, as to their purpose.
If they are nasty anyway, swap them and if it cures your problem, then thats a bonus.

Maybe who fitted the roof did not realise that it is a wise idea to change the seals at the same time too.
