Bumper colour?

Hi, my 79 Cabriolet restoration is progressing slowly, just doing the rear wheel arches etc. at the moment. Anybody know what colour the bumpers should be? (the car is black). At the moment they are a dull mid-grey, were they black once?? What's a good way of making them look better? I've heard painting them does not last.
Cheers … Chris

PS. I've got a good leaflet on fitting a new hood from the German company that advertises on ebay. If anybody wants a copy I will get around to scanning it so it can be emailed. Let me know if interested.

Does the car/bumpers have chrome trim? From what I recall the chrome trimmed bumpers are more of a grey colour and the none chrome ones black. You can buy non chrome black pattern bumpers for about ?35 from GSF and they seem pretty good quality.

Proper paint factors (not Halfrauds etc) sell plastic paints that are supposed to be quite effective, think you need to use special primers etc to ensure finish lasts.

Trade secret SHHHHHHHH…. use a heat gun on the bumper until it goes glossy again ( dont hold it too close cos u`ll melt it) then use a silicon spray over the top of the now glossy plastic when its hot . this wil usually return the plastic to a very acceptable standard .

Cool tip, cheers. Gunna try that. Have been using AutoGlym bumper care, very good and lasts longer than all the others I've tried, but that sounds a bit more permenant. Ta.  :D

Hi, thanks for the info, that hot air gun trick sounds a good one, will give it a try later on.  The bumper is the sort with a chrome trim so anything that avoids spraying colour on, makes life easier.
Shan't be doing a lot today though, got a sunburnt head and mild sunstroke doing the rear wheel arch yesterday!!
Cheers… Chris
