Driving from Herts to Essex on the M25 in my 1.3 CL many years ago, to go to the VW Breakers near Upminster, just off J28 (29?).
As I came down to the roundabout under the M25, I found that the clutch was only partially disengaging when I pressed the pedal. I realised that the clutch cable was breaking through the bulkhead, so I managed to shove it into third gear, by adjusting the engine revs, and drove the last half-mile at about 27mph, coasting into the breakers after pulling it into neutral because I couldn't make the last few turns in third.
I hunted around all of the Mk1's in the yard (this was 1994, so there were a good few, including two or three GTIs  ), and the very last car that I looked in had one of these plates, so I bought it for ?1 and put it on my car to drive home (after getting the other items that I'd come for).
What are the chances of breaking down just as you get to the breaker's yard, and finding and fitting the required item before driving off?
PS: It's never happened since - I was always miles from anywhere when my cars let me down the other (2 or 3) times
