brake lines

hello
can anyone please help i need to replace some brke lines on my mk 1 but want to do the whole job myself from start to finish, only the pipes that need replacing cos some of them are quite tricky and look like an engine out to do properely. the pipe to the rear drivers side has already popped today when i was reversing the car out of the garage so that is immediate but i would like to do the rest. does anyone know where i can get an assembly kit or replacement pipes from. also while i am at it should i change the servo for a 16 valve one, if so any info on this mod would be appreciated thanks .

Automec do the brake pipe kits as well as the metal fuel lines.

http://www.automec.co.uk

You can get a pipe flaring tool and a simple pipe bending tool relatively cheaply from Machine Mart or other such tool supplier.

Alternately check yer local Yeller Pages for Hydraulics Supplier…they will have the pipe and fittings in stock

Used Automec for my fuel pipes but used their Brake pipe kit on my Riley Elf may moons ago.  You need to specify the Copper Nickel (Cupro-nickel even!) since I don't trust plain copper for this application (vibration = Work-hardening = fractures = fluid on floor = no brakes = ouch)

The beauty of the Automec kits is that each pipe is the correct length and has the correct fittings/swages so all you need is a cheapo pipe bender (you can use thumbs but you will be in danger of flattening the pipe if the radii are pretty small)

You can use steel pipes but you will need to provide greater protection to them than original if you want them to last forever.

Note also that someone is flogging "chrome plated pipe to hose clips" on e-bay at the mo

although I believe they are still available from VW : Pt. No. 803 611 715

Machine Mart do a cutting and flaring kit for the copper brake lines.  I used this on mine and replaced the flexi pipes with Goodridge braided items - definately worthwhile…
