bonnet

i started work, got the top looking good then started the bottom, and it was just flaking off the underside so used a wire wheel on a grinder and it just chewed it to peices :banghead:

i took my bonnet down to the local body shop today just to ask if it is worth trying to save.  they said proberly not it wil just eat it away and spread and only last about 6-12 months on the car :(

so a bit gutted, gunna ave to get a new one!!!

any advice were to get one, i thought vw only did cabby ones?
and gpc were abit more than i wanted to spend are the pattern ones any good?

cheers tom

My experience of pattern parts is unless you cannot avoid, don't bother with them.  When restoring a mates s2 the other year, we tried 4 different pattern bonnets and they were so far out.  If you are set on having a new one, go genuine if you can.  In the end we settled for a good condition used one, it fitted a treat and was the same colour, therefore reducing the amount of prep work for re spraying it.

HTH :D

…as above (thanks again Danny…it looks great on the car…

..(must get those stone chips finished on the top of the sill….)

…I also have aquired a brand new, still VAG wrapped bonnet, which will be sprayed up and used when we go to any meets / shows.

What I MUST say is that the bonnet I took off the car was a pattern one freshly sprayed 5 years ago, and it's rusting badly, and had a 'hump' across the full width - quite noticeable.

ORIGINAL panels ARE BEST - believe me. The quality makes up for the extra cost….PERIOD

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

..bought the new VAG one from 'compact' on here (who bought it from VAG but did not need it after all….let's just say we did a good deal….

They seem to go for up to ?170…but honestly if you want quality and a good fit it's worth it….just touching the metal you can feel the difference in the quality of the steel….you get what you pay for.

Quotes for preparing and spraying the new one have been from ?90 (a dodgey looking character) to ?120 (a professional bodyshop, and I've seen their work - superb) - unless I splash out and get a spray outfit myself I'll use the latter.
