Bonnet Shape

Hi,

Did the shape of the bonnet change at all during the Mk1's life ? : I have been informed that early cars were slightly different.

Your help is appreciated.

Many thanks for the responses !.

My car is a 1977 build, so not a swallowtail, likely to be the later type then.

Is there anyone who would be willing to check Ekta ? : I'm afraid I don't have access, nor do I know the part numbers.

Thanks again.

etka isnt too much help, i have 2 part numbers 155 823 031 and 155 823 031a, but there is no year difference just 2 numbers listed for all, 155 823 031 being superceeded by 155 823 031a

the water jet may be different on the early bonnets too, the later one suggests you need a mk2 washer jet.

Does that mean I have a Cabby bonnet on my 81 GTI tin top then as it has the long rectangular hole (yet an R2D2 washer jet?!)

Ha, ok, cheers!

Would this fact make any difference to the panel gap between bonnet and wings, only before I stripped it all it did seem abnormally large :(

no the cab bonnet is still the same shape, just has different hole for the washer jet. if its a pattern bonnet and/or wings that could be the reason

Agree, if you have bad gaps then it's either adjustment or pattern panels

- w/o swage and w/o insulation, early washer jet (snake head)
- with swage and w/o insulation, early washer jet (R2D2!)
- with swage and w/o insulation, late washer jet (long type)

Hi dubboy,

That's great information - what should be fitted to a mid 1977 build GTI ?.

Many thanks.
