bent cabby roof help!!!!

hi pulling my hair out here i have a 83 gl cabby with a three year old roof.

i bought the car a few months ago and the roof has never met the windscreen right the locating pin and j hook comes up fine on the passenger side but the drivers side locating pin comes up short. the really random thing is how far out it is varies. sometimes it's just about ok others times it comes up nearly an inch short i've fiddled with the eccentric bolts which hasn't made any difference. and can't see any obvious bends in the hood frame.

when folded down the passenger side sits down lower and is harder to lock and the driver side seems to sit quiet high and is easy to lock down also the rear window seems wonky when the roofs up and the fabric is creased at on the passenger side next to the rear window. its frustrating not only because i need to use exesive force to lock the roof up but its also really noisy an any main road speed and seems to be causing a leek on the fornt of the door/window/roof join.

p.s the roof moves freely when folding up or down. any help would be greatly appreciated

Could you take some pictures and post them up?

Just struggling to picture in my head where the problem is. the hood itself doesn't have any adjustment if I remember correctly. Just the J hooks. there are tension cables in the sides but can't see as they would make a difference. you can tell if they are knackered by looking at the roof closed and seeing how much of a bow there is.

Bloody shame too, as I just bined one a month back as I couldn't sell it!!

i'll try and get some pics as soon as it stops peeing it down. the tension seems ok on the cable not as tight as some not as loose as other. it almost looks as though someone strong came and twisted the whole hood from the front.

Check that nothing is being trapped in the hinges or the cantilever towards the rear.could be one of the pivots has worn the hole oval shaped and its going into a diferent position randomly, this would explain how sometimes its better than others, you can remove the headlining and opperate the roof to see all the mechanism in working movement and check for slack in the pivots indicating an ovaled hole/hinge.

update!!!! i have fitted a new frame and refitted my existing headliner and padding and all went succesfull but once i fitted the leading edge of the hood the rear tension cable(but not tightened) and the fabric behind the windows it the old problem returned. needless to stay i was p!$$£d to find that my old hood frame was probably fine and i had wasted an afternoon for no reason :banghead:  whats especially odd is that there seems to be no obvious tight spots in the vinyl that should cause the problem. anyone experienced this or know what it might be.

I'm having the same problem. I've explored everywhere and can't find any adjustment points in the frame.
I do need to get a new skin, but i don't wnat to waste my cash if my old frame has had it. I'll post some pics up later this week.

I also snaped the drivers side handle trying to tighten it :(

The only place i can see where there may be a problem is the rear window has been put in at a angle. so the drivers side is lower by about an inch that the passengers side, would this put strain on the roof and pulkl it out of square?

Thanks for your help.

if you're anywhere near bracknell I have a cabby hood frame going free, its not got any issues with folding but it does have rust along the front leading edge. it cant be seen when the skin is fitted however.

usefull to check if your frame is bent before you strip the hood skin off it at the very least!
