Arrrggg - might have destroyed my boot mat!

This will teach me to not be so lazy and sort things out when I notice them and not put it off….

Due to slight weeping on filter head I have been carrying a litre bottle of Synta oil in the boot for the odd top-up. Anyway, kept meaning to anchor it with a strap or put it in a small odds and sods box in the boot to stop it rolling around (as you do). Went out to the car tonight to discover it had fallen over and seems to have got squashed by something and emptied its contents over the boot mat

I mopped most of it up and luckily it didn't come in contact with the seat bottom, but even so I need to remove the mat and try and clean it.

Anyone got any recommendations - is it OK to use the engine degreasant on it if I rinse it off fairly quickly after scrubbing it?

To be honest the boot mat has seen better days as at some point in the past the rear light clusters must have leaked and it got a good soaking.

If possible I'd like to replace it - is it possible to get these from VW anymore (doubtful). Does the cab use the same boot mat that goes under the rear seats?

If not available I guess its time to check out the scrappys, but I'm guessing finding a decent condition one will be tricky if not impossible.

Rich - do the SA Citigolfs use a similar material and shape of bootmat or have they changed it to some kind of soft-touch material?

Any ideas / help on rejuvenating / replacing my boot mat appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris

Try a little Gunk/Jizer or similar on a small area and see how you go but would gues Jizer should be ok.

I noticed that my brothers Polo (L-Reg?) uses same boot mat material as the MK1 Golf. If you can't still buy them new it may be possible to buy the material or two find in scrappy a decent one from another VW group car?

My brother has the Polo estate and boot mat looked similar in size although I think a little too small?

Let us know how you get on - bet you're not the only one needing a new one!

I think a Polo mat may do the job with a bit of fitting.

Will start looking in the next few days.

Chris

You could try Brake Cleaner…a sort of carbon Tet in an aerosol can…spray liberally and mop up with a Kitchen roll or three.

I use it for most  of my degreasing requirements

Good luck

Chris, let us know how you get on with the Polo mat!
My boot mat is a right mess - at some point in the past a previous owner has used the car for transporting chemical drums (apparently - I heard from another previous owner at a ClubGTI meet…) and no matter what I try I can't get the residue off the floor mat. Anything you put in the boot gets covered in a layer of gravelly, oily residue. I've scrubbed, hosed, sprayed with chemicals… But nothing will shift it!

Thanks agin for the tips. Other "more urgent" things have kind of overtaken me now though - the boot mat is the least of my worries   .

As posted in another thread my golf is pretty much dead on my driveway due to either an ignition or a fuelling issue whcih looks like its going to involve some unexpected expenditure - tax disk renewal came through today as well….  feeling a bit borassic at the mo!

Use very concentrated washing powder solution in hot water and a scrubbing brush to agitate it, works really well on grease in my opinion. Then use high pressure hose to wash all the soap out. Obviously on a day when it's going to be able to dry out.

Try using washing powder it to clean your hands sometime after getting really mucky if you want proof (not recommended regulalry, but works really well!)
