Grinding or sanding will permanently damage the glass , it actually embeds its self in to the surface .
Sadly, if badly damaged renewal is your only option , especially for windscreens . Always keep glass well covered when grinding , welding or sanding .
we all live and learn! [ i have done it my self and ruined a windscreen ]

Yeh, can't see do do anything right!
I have rubbed in tcut and there is a good improvement, but when I run my hand over the glass it feels like sand paper.
Is VW glass still available?

I think if you have the ordinary clear glass then you shouldn't have too much difficulty getting a replacement, either from VW or from somewhere like autoglass.
HOWEVER, if you have the Campaign green tinted glass your only option may be a secondhand screen. Up until recently VW still had new ones available, but I think I am right in saying that they were down to less than 10 in the country, and I know for a fact that I got one of those as did Rich (Crazyquiff).
Not sure if VW periodically get these remanufactered, or whether its now no longer available. Sadly, gradually VW seem to be removing Mk1 parts from their system - I guess the demand just isn't there anymore.
Rich (Crazyquiff) may be able to source one for you - send him a PM / email.
If you can find a VW dealer that has them then the going rate is about 70-80 quid incl. VAT I believe.

If your screen is green then try Autoglass - that's where I got mine from. They will do 'supply only' if you ask.
Good luck,
