You can adjust the position of the striker pin which is the bit that sticks out on the body in the door shut, or you can adjust the position of the locking catch which is the part on the door.

It sounds like the pin is in the right place if the door sits right when shut so I'd mark the position of the catch with masking tape or a permenant marker, then slightly slacken off the allen head nuts that hold the catch. You need enough resistance for the catch to stay in it's position without dropping, then gently close the door which will move the catch to it's new position. Gently open the door and retighten the allen bolts.

It might take a few goes to get it right but that should sort it. :)

sounds more liek your hinge and pins need looking at, usually its the lower one that goes. take the door off and wiggle them, if they move then they need replacing. you have to use mk2 golf hingle and pin now unfortunatly they fit but you have to drill out the hole on the body bracket to accept the mk2 golf door bolt

Useful info Rubjonny - what's your view on sourcing secondhand mk1 hinges from a car being broken that doesn't have droopy doors? Are cabby hinges the same?

my view is that its such a pain in the ass to remove hinges id rather just get new ones

rear doors will usually have ok hinges, and 5 door ones last longer than 3 due to them beign lighter. its just the pins are proper tight in the door! i had to put mine in a vice to get them out proper nightmare.

id assuem cabby hinges are the same yes, but probably just as worn. the early mk1 i think had different hinge design?

Found these at VW heritage:

and was just wondering if anyone has had success removing the bush from the new mk2 hinge and fitting it to the old, rather than going down the drilling/tapping route and fitting the new hinge to the car?

I'm assuming it's the wear in the bush that causes the door to drop?

trouble is its pretty well pressed in, I dont imagine it'll come out without being deformed and then the new pin wont fit very well.

I'd just ream out the bolt holes if it was me anyway

do i need to drill out and tap the hole on the body of the bracket so that it accepts the mk1 door bolt?

no you drill out the hole on the shell so it accepts the larger mk2 bolt :)
