Acid dip or Sandblast?

Hi all, friend of mine has bought a tin top and am contemplating on what to do regaridng the paint work.

The car has alot of rust on the everyday areas, bonnet, bottom of doors, arches and boot lid etc….
Is it worth dipping and cutting out the areas mostly affected or sandblasting and cutting out the bad areas?

DOoes anyone know the costs for dipping the car back to bare metal?

Thanks for your help and advise

The problem with either approach is that:

1. They'll remove all the rusty metal, meaning you might lose the reference points etc for welding on replacement panels
2. You'll need to completely strip down the car to a bare shell, which is a mammoth task

There's lots of fiddly bits on a Mk1 Golf, and its the fiddly bits which corrode, not the big flat areas! So I've found that many different approaches need to be taken, with a variety of tools. The most useful to me is a Dremel, some areas which are 1" square, take an entire day and I'll cut and grind to around 0.5 mm accuracy, to try get the repair looking exactly the same as it would have done 25 years ago.

ive had my track car shell sand blasted and tbh i would only take this approach because the end finish wasn't as imperitive, if its a shell that your wanting to restore properly i would get i acid dipped helluva more pricey but a better end result in my opinion.  to get my shell s/blasted cost me ?230.

I made some enquiries a couple of years ago about getting a shell acid dipped with a chap in the midlands and it was gonna be 1500 pounds. Didn't go with it in the end but if your planning a ground up restoration then it's the right way to go.

There is a place on Preston somewhere near Brierley Street. I can't think of the name off hand but I saw 2 mk2 Escort shells being put onto a wagon a couple of weeks ago.

Ill Google in a minute
