absolute silence

hello all
i have got a problem with my car, i had it out the other day to change the fuel pump as it was not running very well, changed the pump and every thing was fine, she was ticking over like a new car. put her back in the garage as i am in the process of doing a few jobs for the mot so have got the battery on a maintenance charger so it is always topped up and the car usually starts first time. the problem is i came to start her up today and absolutely nothing not even a click but the ignition lights came on and did not dim when i turned the start key. the only thing i have noticed is that normally on vw's once you have turned them on then you cannot accidentally reengage the starter, you have to turn off and then restart but for some reason i can reengage if not careful, could the ignition be goosed which is why i am not even getting a click or could it be a fuse or relay . can anyone help please.

Hi dazr32

The ignition is a weak point and i would go and try that first . Haynes manual has a good section on how to remove it . The problem is usually with the ignition switch -the bit at the end of the barrel where you put the key in - . I have found that the switch can burn out and give the symptoms you describe . But before you do make certain your battery and fuze box earth leads are all clean and sound as poor earth's can also give problems ..

Cheers….

i will have a look at the earths at the weekend, do you think spraying some wd 40 down the barrel will help, maybe it is a bad connection or does that just not happen, they either work or they don't.

Worth a try before stripping down , but thoroughly check those earth's first
