2K Lacquer and rain remedy

Hi Folks,

 Just got a bit of a mess on my hands and am homping to get any advice. Decided to use the one week of summer over the last week to restore my rusty front wheel arches as the tin rot was reaching around the edges and looking dicey.

 Everything has gone OK until the end, got a nice basecoat of Bonda oxide and zinc, smoothed things over with filler, 2K paint top coat with an airbrush; several layers of each with some nice drying time between. Got to the last stage of lacquer, managed 2 passes then for the third coat and an unexpected rain shower set in….. really annoying. Thought the best thing was to leave it and not physically touch it until it had dried…. Checked it out next day and the rain drops have left a ghost pattern where they have evaporated, some with quite prominant rings.

 Do I wait for the lacquer to fully harden and try to T-Cut or do I need to face up to sanding with wet and dry and lacquering again?

 Just to flag up I am away on holiday after today so apologies if I don't reply to your posts immediately.

i would let it go hard, try the tcut and see, it dont work, wet fat it back and give a couple more coats, i had something similar on my old bug, t cut worked

Hi Chris, thanks for your quick reply.

 Will take that advice, seems the sensible approach and now the veins have stopped throbbing in my temple I am in a much calmer frame of mind; at the time I was so irritated I just wanted to rush in and irradicate the mess.

 Did you use a buffer or elbow grease? This 2k looks hard as nails.

i think it will need sanding back and then buffing up

the water in in the laquer that where the cloudyness comes from

 Fortunately it did dry a bit before the heavens opened so it hasn't gone cloudy, just got very fine rings where water droplets have rested. The gloss seems uniform in sheen, just got this rough texture where these rings are and you can see them in reflection.

 Looks mint in the rain though, maybe in this country I'll be alright.  :lol:

 I'll let you know how the T-cut goes when I come back and hopefully it won't need re doing.

Wet flat, polish, if still there flat back to base coat and re laquer.

It's an old painters trick for wet look.
Base coat colour, mist with water to get droplets, spray second colour leave to dry, wipe over and laquer gives the look of the car being covered in water droplets although it ain't, lol. You stumbled on a customisers trick there by accident.

Hi Folks,

 Just got back from holidays and itching to get at this problem so quickly got to work. Looks like it's going to be a wet and dry job as the problem seems quite severe… I think the severity depends on how much drying time you got before the water is added ( which for me wasn't that long unluckily. ) Hopefully for other T-cut may work, it's work a go.

 2 coats of T-Cut followed by McGuires ultimate compound and topped off with Techwax, flatted the water rings a little but they were pretty prominant under closer inspection.

 For now will settle for the cool 70's dragster look and tackle this next summer. Just glad I halted the rust more than anything.
