won't start, will start, won't start

ooh I could crush a grape this morning…

Got in the car this morning for the trip to work and it wouldn't fire up, turned over fine but just wouldn't fire.

Gave it a good try for ages aswell cos' it's got a new battery but no joy.

Got out, took the dizzy cap, coil lead etc off and gave them a wipe to get rid of any damp
(shouldn't really be any though I thought as car is garaged overnight).

Got back in, turned it over…wah-hey fired up straight away.

Great I thought, drove it out of garage onto drive left it running and got out to lock the garage up,
was just about to get back in car and it just cut out and would not start back up again at all after trying for about 10 mins

Have had to push it back into the garage cos i had to get to work.

Does anyone have any ideas for possible causes? or what I can try when I get home?

I'm thinking it might be the dreaded fuel pump

Could be a dodgy HT lead.. if it doesn't start when you get home, make sure your getting a good spark from the main lead coming from the coil lead.

if any of the others are dodgy then it should start but misfire IMO

I'd suspect the fuel pump relay - check you can hear it when cranking and for a couple of secs after.  These relays can be intermittant sometimes - see my post in this thread for more info http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3710&highlight=

'twas the fuel pump relay, I gambled and got one from ECP on the way home from work, stuck it in and now it 's starting and running fine.

don't know what I'd do without this site
