Whirring Noise After Cambelt & Tensioner Change

Hi,

I have recently changed the cambelt & tensioner on my mk1 colf cabriolet and now I can hear a whirring noise coming from that area when the engine is cold. Once warmed up the noise dissapears

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks

Rick

Make sure the cam belt covers are done up tight enough, had exactly the same problem after i had mine off and after alot of head scratching turned out to be a loose bolt (only very slightly loose thou).

Sounds like the cambelt is too tight

Yup, I'd be checking the tension

As someone who is scared to touch cam belt tensioner and may have a similar loud pulley, how do you check to see if the cam belt is too tight? How much play should be in the belt? Can I lube the tensioner pulley?

Hold the belt with your finger and thumb and you should be abe to twist it 90 degrees with out really struggling....its one of those things once youve done it right once youll know how it should feel...you just need to slacken the tensioner off very slighty...

Lubing the tensioner is not the cure its the noise of the belt running tight/stretched over the pulley

+1… Had the same noise when i changed the cam belt on my Mk1 Jetta Gti some years ago and it was the timing belt, but DO NOT start the engine after adjusting it, turn the crank pulley by hand first then re-check the tension ,i started my engine and the belt jumped resulting in two bent valves.Lesson learned the hard way.
