Which type of tappets on a GTI engine?

I am a little confused about which type of tappets are used on a 1.8 GTI engine. Are they Hydraulic or do they have shims for adjustment? My haynes book says shims but some people on this site say their engines have hydraulic followers.
My engine is noisy when started after standing for a week, but quiets down after a minute or so. There is always a ticking sound similar to that made by tappets out of adjustment.

depends on the age of it, could have either! if there is a missing upper cam cap, its hydro. if they're all there, its solid

If its noisy after standing and then quietens after running it, it means you have the hydro equipped head.
