There's a guide on www.fastgolf.org.uk

You can use any 020 gearbox but must match the clutch FRICTION DISC to the (input shaft of) the gearbox. I've never counted splines but most 020 boxes have a 22mm input shaft, 16V Mk2 and some later Mk3 boxes have 24mm input shaft.

There's the gear ratio guide on the left but you're better off relying on the fastgolf one because its been kept updated, there's a few little errors in the one on the left.

mine has a mk1 box (22mm) shaft
and its fantastic for acceleration.
mk2 16v box has longer gears so im told. depends on what you want from it.
i prefer acceleration!

as said above so may different ratios on the 020 box's always check codes first

drop us a pm if you want a 16 valve box!

16V box has a longer 2nd gear, but the rest of its ratios are the same as a 1.8GTI Mk1 box.

do you know why? think my box is the original one but was on a 1.6 engine. no idea on code but do you think they would be the same(  1.6 & 1.8 )
might keep that box now!

Its so the car achieves 60mph in 2nd gear, rather than 3rd. This means that "on paper" (ie in brochures and road tests) its 0-60mph time is better, so its great for marketing. In the real world, its a little bit worse because the lower the gear, the better a car accelerates; and if the gears are spaced out properly (as they were on the original close ratio 5 speed in the Mk1) its nicer to drive.

its the MK2 8v AUG box which has a longer 2nd gear, the 16v 2Y box has the same 2nd gear as the 9a and ACD code boxes

2y is same ratios as 9a/acd box but has a slightly shorter 5th gear, which means a bit higher revs on the motorway and slightly lower top speed. hardly anyhting in it though so just use whichever one is in the best nick!

Gear Up!
