Heard that automatic transmission fluid (half litre) in the engine and run GENTLY for 200 miles or so, drain, cheap oil in, flush, new filter and some quantum synta semi-synthetic is the way forward.
The atf has loads of setergents in it that cleans up the insides a treat.

I ve just done a oil change on mine 132000 mile DX,
I ve used just a standard Granville oil flush, because oil flush is just oil flush at the end of the day so any will do, and I ve used Valvoline Max Life 10w 40 semi synthetic, apparantly it has properties in it that replenishes all engine oil seals great for a high milege car, its the only oil on the market that has these properties??? So we will see, but I'd definatly go for a Semi Syn 10w 40.

I've been using Valvoline VR1 20w-50 Racing Oil. It's been running fine on that.

really does depend on the mileage and condition of your engine.

I'm running Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W40, in mind. But I think the oil pressure is too high, this oil is quite thin, would this effect my oil pressure?

oil type
When i bought a second hand TSR Donnington off eBay i asked TSR the same question the answer they gave me was no fancy oil no synthetic just a good quality multigrade remember the newer fancy oils have been designed for modern all singing and dancing engines our engines where designed to run on cheap old style oil the secret is to change oil and filter regularley i do mine 2x a year and i'm doing about 6000 miles a year.

the debate on synthetic and non will never settle. i've run mobil on my old gti for about 40,000 miles. loved it.
the main thing as a5opy say's is regular oil AND filter changes. i change oil and filter about 3-4,000 miles. better using a reasonable mineral oil for ?10 and changing twice a year, than using mobil1 and changing once every 2 years.

Even more important than regular changes, is the quantity of oil. Keep it topped up and don't let it run below the level on the dipstick!
