when i do mine i use standard plugs that are recommended at the motorfactors, but not the cheapest ones available around 5e each.as for the oil i run with 15w40 mineral oil for daily driving about, but if i'm going for a track run or long journey at speed i replace it with semi 10w40. i find that semi has a tendency to come out tro the old gaskets too easy for normal use and can make the tappets a bit noisy. you might put in an engine flush into the old oil before removing it as you never know what muck has been in there before, and repalce the timing belt for safe measure.

When new VW recommended Multigrade 20w/50 or 15w/50 , lots of people use Castrol Gtx its good stuff and cheap in your local [if you have one ] Asda supermarket . Your 10w/40 is too thin and could cause leaks as for plugs check out THIS SPARK PLUG WEB SITE Then bob out and buy at your local factors or on line . As jamez said changing the belt is agood idea and a must is your fuel filter at the same time unless you can guarantee its been done ?

Multi electrode plugs are a waste of money IMO. Just check the electrode for gap and condition from time to time. Most Mk1s will need the spark plug changing due to deterioration/contamination before any advantage of a multi electrode comes into play. They are only really any good for modern engines with proper ignition management leading to longer life.

I have had no problems using Synta silver though even the multigrade is good enough.

I'm running multi-electrode plugs in mine simply because that is what I was given last time I ordered any.  I am running a much later Mk3 Polo GT engine on breakerless ignition though.

If you are running original ignition then just stick with good old single electrode plugs - NGK's are my favourites…

If you don't have any details of when the timing belt was last changed - get it changed a.s.a.p.
